National Senior Citizen Day - August 21st!

Did you know there is a day specifically dedicated to celebrating Senior Citizens? Coming up is National Senior Citizens Day. Some people celebrate Senior Citizens Day on August 14 as it was the day past US president Franklin Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act in 1935. However, in 1988, Ronald Reagan, who was the US president at the time, declared August 21 to be National Senior Citizens Day.

This observance was established in honor of senior citizens in the US who made positive contributions in their communities. The day was also created to bring awareness of social, health, and economic issues that affect senior citizens.

How to Observe:

To celebrate National Senior Citizens Day, spend time with the senior citizens you know.  Let them know that they are appreciated and loved.  It may also be a good day to volunteer at a retirement home and share your smile with those who may not otherwise get a visitor today.

If you are a senior citizen, check for special discounts and promotions that may be offered at stores and restaurants in your area.

Use #SeniorCitizensDay to post on social media.

1. Spend time at a nursing/retirement home
One of the kindest and most rewarding things one can do is make a visit to a nursing home. Sit and chat with residents. Play games and participate in activities. You can really make a difference in someone’s day, week, or even his or her life, and trust us, you will find the experience fun and rewarding too.

2. Reach out to a senior family member
Do you have a senior family member? Perhaps it’s a parent, grandparent, aunt, or uncle. Visit them and spend some time together. If you can’t see them in person, give them a call and let them know how much you appreciate them.
